Sample 4-Day Winter Itinerary
Here’s a sample itinerary for a 4-day weekend in late January (easily expanded or compacted as time allows). Thursday Morning: Arrive Juneau mid-morning. Afternoon: Head up to Eaglecrest Ski Area for an afternoon on the mountain . A Mecca for powder, Eaglecrest tends 31 alpine runs and offers tons of ungroomed areas. The ski school’s certified instructors will get everyone up and running – whether it's on board, skis or tube. Evening: Dinner and a play -- choose from one of Juneau’s many fine restaurants, and then check out the performance at Perseverance Theatre. Overnight at one of Juneau’s many comfy accommodations. Friday Morning: Check in early (5:30 am) for a ferry ride up scenic Lynn Canal to Haines (arrive 11:30 am). Afternoon: Spend time outdoors enjoying snow machining or back-country skiing, or take in the town. Evening: Stroll the streets and find a unique spot for dinner. Chat with the locals. Overnight: Cozy up in a warm room at a Haines hotel or B&B. Saturday Morning: Enjoy a walking tour of historic Fort William H. Seward. Afternoon: Catch a commuter flight back to Juneau (leaves noonish, arrives around 12:40 pm). Head to the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. Enjoy the exhibits at the visitors' center, then get out there and have some fun – snowshoe or cross-country ski on the lake (rentals available in town), sled on the hill, trek across the lake to the glacier face, or walk one of the many trails. Evening: After dinner, take in a performance by the Juneau Symphony. Overnight in Juneau. Sunday Morning: Discover Juneau’s past at the Alaska State Museum and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Enjoy a casual stroll through town while you shop at the many fine gift stores, boutiques, and galleries. Afternoon: Cross-country ski or snowshoe at the Mendenhall Lake Campground (closed to camping in winter). Evening: Catch a flight home while wishing you didn’t have to leave. |
