What time is it there now?

A state the size of Alaska needs it own time zone. We are one hour behind the Pacific Time Zone and four hours behind the East Coast Time Zone. When it is 12 noon in New York, then it is 8:00 AM in Juneau.

When is the best time to see whales?

Whales are in the Juneau area year round. However, from April to November the majority of humpback whales return to the waters of the northern Inside Passage.

Do you have car rentals in Juneau?

Yes, most national rental car firms operate out of the airport. Additionally, local auto dealers rent cars, vans and even buses. Many of these firms will offer to pick you up or drop you off. See the Travel Planner section of the web site for contact information.

Can I drive to Glacier Bay?

No. Glacier Bay/Gustavus is only accessible by air or water. It is a short 37 miles from Juneau. Convenient commuter air service is available year round. During the summer, daily jet service is provided by Alaska Airlines.

How do we get to Glacier Bay?

Several transportation options are available including: small plane, Au Nu ferry (no autos), Alaska Airlines, small cruise ship, large cruise ship.

Can I see Glacier Bay in one day?

Yes, although a minimum of two days is suggested. To visit Glacier Bay in one day, an early morning flight with one of several scheduled commuter plane services is required. The Glacier Bay cruise aboard the Spirit of Adventure departs 7:30 am from Bartlett Cove. The late afternoon return trip to Juneau can be by commuter plane, jet or ferry.

Where can we get an Alaska Marine Highway Ferry schedule?

It is available on the web at www.alaska.gov/ferry.

What is the weather forecast?

It changes daily, sometimes hourly. A five day forecast is available on the weather section of this web site.

What should we bring to wear?

During the spring, summer and fall, dressing in layers is the key to being comfortable. A light shirt, short or long sleeved, makes an excellent first layer. Over that, a sweatshirt, wool sweater of fleece pullover will provide warmth. The ideal outer layer is a light waterproof jacket. Layers should be easy to remove depending on weather changes and your activity.

How can I get to the Ferry Terminal?

Taxi service is available. The nearest bus stop is 1.75 miles from the terminal.

How far is the airport from downtown?

A short 10 miles. Most hotels offer courtesy van service. Taxi cabs and public bus service is also available.

Where is the statue of Patsy Ann?

The statue, in memory to Juneau's most famous resident, an English Bull Terrier, is located on the downtown dock boardwalk halfway between the library and the small boat lightering ramp. Can we get married in Alaska?

Yes… with a little planning. Contact the Marriage Commissioner c/o Vital Statistics at 907-465-3038 to obtain a license or apply at www.hss.state.ak.us The license must be picked up in person. It will be available three business days after the application is received and is good for 90 days, anywhere in Alaska. There are several totem poles and historic buildings on the National Register located in the downtown area. The City Museum has a complete list and detailed map. Below are a few and their approximate location.
