| WELCOME TO THE JUNEAU TRAVEL NEWS - Autumn 2004 |
Grin and "BEAR" It
In Alaska, it's hard to make meaningful distinctions between awesome, incredible and unbelievable. Take brown bear viewing for example. It's right up there with watching a 25-ton humpback rocket out of the water in a titanic pirouette or trekking along the spine of a 3,000 year old glacier.
Brown bear viewing is a little different though. It touches us on a primal level that rouses our sense of wonder and vulnerability. Let's face it...bears are our largest land carnivores. They are immensely powerful, fast and protective. Yet bears have an amazing capacity to tolerate the curiosity of humans when they (humans and bears) are operating within the "rules" that go along with designated viewing areas.
Even so, when you step out into the wilderness in Alaska, you have to do so with the understanding of that classic line "we aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto." That means do some homework and learn how to behave wisely in bear territory...for your sake and for theirs.
As we mention in this issue of the Juneau Travel News, one of the best ways to view brown bears is to go with a licensed and permitted guide to the Admiralty Island Pack Creek bear viewing area. A guide can save you time and angst by doing all the permitting, arranging for transportation AND help you get the most out of the experience by sharing their knowledge.
It's not too early to start planning for next summer! You can get to Juneau quickly and conveniently on Alaska Airlines (2 hours from Seattle) or take a more leisurely trip via the Alaska Marine Highway. With all the adventures that Juneau offers, you're sure to find something to GRIN about!
