All Hail the King! At the 59th Annual Golden North Salmon Derby

Each year since 1946 this competitive event has brought residents and visitors together to put their skills (and their luck) to the test in the icy waters surrounding Juneau. With every cry of "Fish on!" anglers hope to bring home a winning fish and some serious bragging rights.

In 2004 derby officials registered upwards of 1,000 anglers of all ages and abilities for a chance to win cash and prizes awarded for the top 100 weightiest King or Coho salmon. In addition, a grand prize of $100,000 is awarded to the lucky angler who catches the one special fish sporting a derby tag.

The Derby Offers an Excellent Opportunity for Family Fun and Adventure
"It’s such a wonderful family time," said Maggie Hall, who caught the $100,000 tagged fish in 1996. "My family has fished the derby every year since we moved up here from California in 1971. Our children were two and five at the time."

Kings, Coho and Scholars
As part of the derby, the Territorial Sportsman Scholarship Foundation has awarded 201 scholarships totaling over one million dollars to deserving young people since 1953. All fish turned in during the derby are sold and the proceeds donated to the scholarship. So don’t forget even the small fish are winners.
