As the Gateway to Glacier Bay National Park, the community of Gustavus sits among some of the most splendid scenery and pristine wilderness remaining today. Situated on the single road entering the park, Gustavus provides convenient access to Glacier Bay and the areas many exciting activities. Witness the thunderous calving of tidewater glaciers, see wildlife such as Humpback and Orca whales and coastal bears as you immerse yourself in Alaska’s majesty. Paddle on a guided kayak excursion or chart your own self guided course of exploration, such as a cruise to Point Adolphus onboard a whale watching tour, or cast a line for world-class halibut and salmon sports fishing. Find a guide to take you on a photography, ecology, biology, mycology or birding tour. Flightseeing, backpacking, biking, diving, golf and other activities are also available. Survey the National Park Service museum, view slide shows, or follow free guided nature hikes.

The community boasts an array of accommodations, from cabins and bed and breakfasts to hotels and luxurious lodges. Gustavus has a grocery store, restaurant, volunteer fire department and a full range of visitor accommodations, services and activities.

About 50 air miles from Juneau, Gustavus is remote but easy to reach. Charter and small planes furnish year-round service from neighboring communities. During the summer, Alaska Airlines provides daily jet service between Juneau and Gustavus. Tour boats and charter boats are also available.

The Glacier Bay National Park headquarters is situated just eight miles outside of Gustavus, on what was an ice field just 200 years ago. The fastest recorded glacial retreat in history, a glacier over 4,000 ft thick withdrew to reveal diverse land and seascapes hosting a myriad of plant and wildlife. The expanse receded, and the land now known as Gustavus was created from glacial moraine. Relieved from weighty glaciers, the land experienced a natural phenomenon known as isostatic rebound. The terrain continuously rises about an inch per year, and fresh earth emerges along the shores.

The flat terrain and maritime climate appealed to farmers who homesteaded the land around 1914. Over time, agriculture gave way to tourism. Once called Strawberry Point after the crop that flourishes here, our current name is derived from Point Gustavus, 7 miles away. Gardening and golf are popular pastimes. Regardless of how you experience it, friendly Gustavus is an exotic destination that can feel like home.
