Mendenhall Fireside Lectures: Monitoring Brooks River Bears, Not Just Fat Bear Week

Ever wonder how Katmai National Park knows so much about each of those bears during Fat Bear Week? Measuring wildlife population demographics can be especially challenging in remote areas, but Katmai wildlife biologist Leslie Skora will discuss how documenting unique physical and behavioral features has allowed for the creation of a long-term record of individual brown bears using the Brooks River. Come learn how that record helps scientists!

The annual Fireside Lectures are a free, twelve-week series of hour-long, public presentations every Friday evening at 7 p.m. AKST, from January to March. This year the presentations will return to their usual in-person setting, with an accompanying virtual livestream here on Facebook. No tickets are necessary. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For an accessible copy of the 2023 Fireside Lecture Series schedule, please call the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center at (907)-789-0097 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. or email amber.debardelaben@usda.gov.
