Getting To Juneau
Remoteness was never so accessible
Juneau is Alaska’s closest “big” city to the Lower 48, which makes it surprisingly reachable any time of year. In just over a two-hour flight, Alaska Airlines can get you here on one of their daily flights from Seattle or Anchorage, multiple direct flights arrive at Juneau's airport daily. Delta Airlines flies to Juneau seasonally. Charter, regional and major airlines all serve Juneau International Airport, Southeast Alaska’s air transport hub.
Cruising remains the most popular way to explore the Inside Passage; Juneau is a port of call for large and small lines, alike. For the independent traveler, the state-run Alaska Marine Highway ferry system serves more than 30 coastal communities. A true adventure, the 1500-mile Alaska-Canadian Highway—aka the “ALCAN”—crosses some of the world’s wildest country. But of course, any road trip to Juneau necessitates a leg at sea; the only “road” in is the Alaska Marine Highway.
Getting around while you are here
Walk
There are a number of ways to get around when you are here. Downtown is very walkable and there is a sea walk that runs along the cruise ship docks directly downtown all the way out to the life-size whale statue at Bill Overstreet Park.
Bicycle
If you like the idea of getting around Juneau under your own steam, there are also bike rentals available downtown. The friendly staff at Cycle Alaska will provide expert local recommendations for your ride.
Taxi, Pedicab, and Rideshare
If you have a group looking for a local's perspective or for a ride to the glacier, there are taxis available downtown. Additionally, rideshare options are available as well. There are even a couple of pedicab companies if you want to ride around for a tour or just point A to point B in the downtown area.
Rental cars
There are a range of options to drive yourself as well. Most rental car companies have either a summer location downtown or a year-round option at the airport.
Capital Transit System
The city bus has a ride-free zone that will get you up the hill to the Alaska State Capitol building. More information can be found here.
