Adventure Smart: Simple Tips to Stay Safe and Healthy in Southeast Alaska

From glacier hikes to whale watching, Southeast Alaska is full of unforgettable experiences and unpredictable terrain. Whether you're here for a weekend cruise stop or a summer-long adventure, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your trip safe, healthy and on track.
1. Dress for the elements. Weather here changes fast. A sunny morning can turn to rain by afternoon. Bring layers, waterproof outerwear and sturdy shoes, whether you're walking downtown or hiking through the rainforest.
2. Don’t forget your meds. Delays happen. Make sure you pack enough prescription medications to cover a few extra days, just in case. It’s also smart to keep them in your carry-on if you’re flying in.
3. Respect the terrain. Even short hikes can include slick spots, uneven roots or steep grades. Good traction and ankle support are your best friends here. And if you're near water or on trails, keep your eyes on the ground– slips happen fast when the views are distracting.
4. Keep an eye on tides and trails. Tide swings in Southeast Alaska can be dramatic, sometimes up to 20 feet. Before heading out to explore beaches or launch a kayak, check local tide charts. Getting stranded, or soaked, can happen faster than you think.
5. Fuel up and hydrate. Cool temps can trick you into thinking you're not sweating or tired. Stay hydrated, bring snacks and give yourself breaks. Long daylight hours can stretch your energy more than you realize.
Exploring Southeast Alaska should be a thrill, not a worry. And if something unexpected does happen– whether it’s a sprained ankle, a sting or a wayward fishhook- know that quality walk-in medical care is available across the region.
