What Is the Alaska Folk Festival? 

The Alaska Folk Festival is an annual, volunteer-run music festival held in Juneau, Alaska. The 50th year of the festival will take place from April 7-13, 2025, featuring seven days of free concerts, dance performances, workshops, and spontaneous jam sessions. 

Featured guest artists include Rhiannon Giddens with Dirk Powell headlining. Additionally, the festival will showcase the Deke Dickerson Western Swing All-Stars as the Guest Dance Band and Suzanne Girardot as the Guest Caller.  

This grassroots event is all about the music. It’s free to perform and free to attend, fostering an inclusive and community-driven atmosphere. Musicians of all skill levels are welcome to share their talent, and attendees can enjoy free performances all week long.  

Juneau Folk Festival Highlights 

The Alaska Folk Festival is a vibrant celebration of music and dance, offering a variety of engaging activities, including: 

  • Live Performances: Experience a diverse lineup of folk music from solo artists, duos, and bands of all sizes. The festival’s inclusive nature allows musicians of all skill levels to perform, ensuring a rich tapestry of sounds and styles.
  • Dance Events: Participate in traditional folk and contra dances accompanied by live music. These events provide opportunities for audience participation, making them a fun and immersive experience for all.
    • Coffee & Jam - Friday April 11 at the JACC, 9a - 1p. Open jam & dancing! 
    • Evening Dances: Thurs, Fri, and Saturday at the JACC, 7p - 12p. 45minute sets of diverse dance bands, bring your dancing shoes! 
  • Workshops: Learn from seasoned musicians in various hands-on workshops. These sessions cover a range of topics, from instrument techniques to songwriting, catering to both beginners and experienced musicians. 
  • Jam Sessions: Join in or listen to spontaneous jam sessions happening throughout the festival. These informal gatherings are a cornerstone of the festival’s community spirit, offering a chance to connect with fellow music lovers.

How to Attend Alaska Folk Fest 

Festival performances and events are held at Centennial Hall, 101 Egan Dr., Juneau, Alaska, with additional dances at the JACC, 350 Whittier St., Juneau, Alaska. Singer Songwriter workshops are held at the Goldtown Theater at 171 Shattuck Way #109. Here’s what you need to know: 

Tickets 

One of the best things about the Alaska Folk Festival is that it’s free to attend! No tickets are required for general admission to performances. However, donations are highly encouraged to help keep the festival going. And there will be merch for purchase. Each year brings new poster artwork, and the commemorative art is available to be printed on hooded sweatshirts as well as other items. 

Getting Here 

Juneau is easily accessible by air or by the Alaska Marine Highway System (ferry). The Juneau International Airport (JNU) serves direct flights from cities like Seattle and Anchorage. Alternatively, you can take the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry) if you’re traveling from another part of the state or beyond. 

Parking and Transportation 

Parking can be limited in downtown Juneau during the festival. Consider using public transportation, walking, or taking a taxi or rideshare service to Centennial Hall and other festival venues.
