Juneauites love to hike, and we have a cool 250-miles of hiking trails to choose from. Juneau is a magical place and there is so much to discover. If you are ready to hit the trails and enjoy the amazing vistas, abundant waterfalls, chances to spot wildlife, and experience the real Alaska, here are seven practical hiking tips to keep you safe.
Plan ahead. Get a map and route information. Check the weather and don’t forget to tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return.
Dress appropriately. Wear sturdy shoes (waterproof is a bonus). Dress in layers and take rain gear. The weather can change quickly so it’s a good idea to be prepared for all types of weather.
Stay on established trails. This is for the preservation of the trails, wildlife, and your safety. Hazards can crop up abruptly. Pay close attention.
Respect wildlife. If you encounter wild animals, such as bears, give them their space. This is for your safety as well as theirs.
Go prepared. Be sure to pack plenty of food, water, a first-aid kit and a change of clothes. A quick hike can turn into a long one.
Respect the environment. Leave the trails better than you found them and always pack your garbage out with you. If you pack it in, pack it out.
Don’t be afraid to turn back. We’ve all been there. Maybe the trail is longer, steeper, muddier, or slicker than you expected. Know your limits and don’t be afraid to head back early. Your health and safety are of paramount importance. There is always another day or another trail.
